Mandrake Zauber is a priest who has been artificially bred for the purpose of supplying a body for the imminent reincarnation of the new Messiah, a woman who, if her last messiahship was anything to go by, was a terrifying force.

He is the last in a long line of clones of the previous Messiah, Huldra Ven Marsden. who predicted her own resurrection a thousand years previously, created a genetic line in her image, then disappeared. But something has happened, something that no one saw coming, and the most important man in the Capella system must avoid his messianic destiny at all costs.

This is a story about a man who has spent his life under the control of a brutal religious order in a world dominated by a mysterious plague and by religious obsession, a dystopia that is in the throes of moral and biological disintegration: the Capella planetary system some five thousand years after its colonisation by the Fleeters, the descendants of the original Urthers.

Mandrake Zauber has gone missing, and none is more aware of what this could mean than the Marsden witch, the monster who set the cascade of horror in motion in order to become the Messiah of the humans, and who manipulates the protagonist from her other-worldly lair.

What Mandrake does next threatens to change human destiny forever, not only in the Capella System, but throughout the Galaxy.
